Learning Qualities
Artist Statement
Lucien Dante Lazar (b. Chicago, IL, 1994) is an interdisciplinary artist whose praxis is founded in the intersections of art, science, and spirituality. He received his BA from Bard College (2016), his MFA from California College of the Arts (2020), and is currently working on his PhD in the Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness program at California Institute of Integral Studies. His dissertation will concern the pedagogy of spiritual development through the diversity of the arts.
Lucien’s current exhibition at The Commons Community and Arts Center in collaboration with Thoreau College, entitled Learning Qualities, is a series of twelve watercolor crayon drawings. In creating this body of work, Lucien endeavored to perceive both the beings of the spiritual worlds as well as their dynamic relationships, which he sees to serve as the foundations of sensory experience. By uniting this creative perception with artistic activity, Lucien was able to transmute these living thoughts into embodied artistic forms. In perceiving the qualities of the artworks of Learning Qualities, Lucien experiences that the inspired, intuitive, and imaginative capacities he utilized for their creation become revealed by the spiritual beings themselves as the essential expression and meaning of the artworks. The drawings of Learning Qualities are therefore documents of this multi-dimensional creative activity, and thus reveal to their viewers, this creative process. As living documents of this inner development, Lucien believes that others may, through a living perception of color and form, utilize these drawings to serve a similar development within themselves.
