Located in the beautiful Ocooch Mountains of the Driftless region in southwest Wisconsin, Firecloud Pottery is inspired by ancient and indigenous creations using clay, mineral paints, art, and other natural materials. All clay, and minerals for making paints, are locally sourced, harvested by hand, directly from the Earth of this region. Firecloud pottery is handmade using coils, slab, or pinching techniques. The pottery is then fired using primitive techniques with wood, charcoal, coal, pine cones, or animal dung. No wheel or kiln are used in this creative process.
We are so proud to be displaying nearly three dozen exemplars of this rich artform in a glorious display in our gallery. This year we have been reflecting on the power of place, and the sanctity of the driftless region in particular and so we are very grateful to be able to showcase art that is literally made from the Earth which flows beneath our feet.
Firecloud Pottery is the work of artists Maureen Smiley and Kevin Rowley, who will be coming to The Commons to offer a unique workshop, discussing their process and techniques, as well as some background on natural clay pottery and their indigenous inspirations.
